A Letter from Your Host, Tony Cornelius

“What feels old is new again.” That phrase resonates deeply with me every time someone tells me how they’ve discovered - or rediscovered – Soul Train. From the kids who see those epic vintage episodes on YouTube for the very first time to the fans who were with us since the very early days in Chicago, the reaction is always the same; a powerful mix of delight, toe-tapping and head-bobbing groove and awe. And they always come away with a deeper connection to – and appreciation of - the music and culture of R&B.

So I’m starting off a brand new year by discovering as well as rediscovering my life. Family. Friendships. Music. Love. Peace. Soul. And it will be easy to do this when I’m surrounded by all of these things on the upcoming Soul Train Cruise. In just a couple of weeks, my dearest friends that span a lifetime will be with me. In this issue of the 411, you’ll hear about just how far back Marshall Thompson and my family go. When I see him, we’ll reminisce about the past and talk about our plans for the future. We’ll share memories and news. And we’ll marvel at how blessed we have been. I can think of no better way to celebrate the new year than by being surrounded by so many old friends like Marshall.

I’ll also be looking forward to making new friends who I share so much in common with that I’ll instantly feel like we’ve known each other for a lifetime. The music and culture of Soul Train, and the impact it has had on all of our lives, binds us all into one huge, incredible family. I can’t think of a better way to start off the new year than with all of you by my side.
